A mediados de 1969 Zappa se decide por terminar con su banda Mothers of Invensions, fundamentalmente por razones artísticas y sobre todo económicas. De esta manera se embarca en un nuevo proyecto, en lo que significaria su primer trabajo como artista principal. Finalmente tras dos meses de grabacion, en octubre salio editado Hot Rats. Con el poder del virtuosismo de su guitarra, y acompañado con Ian Underwood (compañero de MOI), en el piano, clarinetes y saxos, Zappa logro realizar una exelente fusion entre el Jazz y el Rock. El resultado final fue un disco superlativo, casi instrumental (tan solo "Willie The Pimp" es cantado) con temas que alternan larguisimas improvisaciones con melodias perfectamente ensayadas.
Hot Rats no solo fue muy bien recibido por la prensa especializada, sino tambien que fue el disco que termino de catapultar a Zappa como uno de los guitarristas mas respetados y elogiados de la epoca.
En cuanto a la tapa del album, tiene una particularidad, la chica que esta saliendo de la cripta, es Christine Frka, en ese entonces novia de Alice Cooper (que acababa de publicar su primer disco, también en el sello de Zappa).
